Kapehan under the bridge

The Riverside Boardwalk, the asphalt-paved pedestrian avenue on the northern bank of the Iloilo River between the Carpenter Bridge and the Benigno Aquino Avenue Bridge, is a beehive of activity as early as 4:30 in the morning. Hundreds of Ilonggos come here to walk, jog and do aerobics exercises before the break of dawn, making it the center of healthy lifestyle in the City.

Exercise buffs enjoy a hot cup of coffee and gossip in the "Kapehan under the bridge" at the foot of the newly-built Carpenters Bridge in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

But as Senator Franklin Drilon had discovered, a work-out here is best followed by a steaming cup of coffee in the “Kapehan under the bridge”, literally the world’s most expensive coffeeshop because its roof is the new bridge itself. The “Kapehan” was introduced by businessman Rolando Layson as a shelter from the rain and a place where exercise buffs can chat after a work-out. No, the “Kapehan” doesn’t sell coffee; you bring your own 3-in-1 coffee sachets. The place provides free hot water and plastic chairs.
